FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

Father Michael Nilon

4th June 2010:  LENNOX HEAD TORNADO: All of us in the parish are with the people of Lennox Head in prayer and support at this difficult time. Immediately after news broke, we offered Thursday morning Mass for you all. We all tend to think that disasters like this only happen somewhere else – and usually a long way away. But they can happen any- where, and even those who are not personally affected will know someone who is. There is also the important sense of being part of a community that is suffering. The Lennox and northern parts of the parish are in our prayers each day during this local crisis.

2nd June 2010Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York spoke recently to priests in Irelat_dolan.jpegnd.  Here are a couple of comments he made:  "...the priesthood is a call, not a career; a redefinition of self, not just a ministry; a way of life, not a job; a state of being, not a function; a permanent, lifelong commitment, not a temporary style of service; an identity, not a role."  Archbishop Dolan went on to say:  "To those who claim the problem is that, as a matter of fact, Church teaching is too holy, too aloof, too distant, too out of touch, I say the problem is hardly Church teaching but lack of fidelity to it."  Read the full and excellent article here.  (low res pdf download)

11th May 2010:  Have you ever noticed all the extra people at Mass at Easter and Christmas.  Of course, some are visitors and/or our family members who are here for the occasion with the family or friends.  Once someone shows at least some interest in praying with us on Sundays and feasts, let's make sure that we do all we can to encourage them to be here regularly on Sundays - as the Lord has asked.  Here's an interesting reflection printed on the website 'Busted Halo' just after Easter last year.

21st January 2010:  Haiti tragedy:  We are all praying for the Haitian people  in their time of tragedy.  Caritas Australia (Catholic welfare) has provided us with some details.  See them here (pdf).  You can go to the Caritas website here to make a donation

29th October 2009: In the two parish bulletins for this coming weekend (All Saints - 1st Nov) I listed some Catholic news sites which might be of interest to you. I am re-printing them here so you can simply click on the links to view those sites. The following is taken from the bulletins:

Every Sunday we have two Catholic newspapers (from Sydney and Brisbane) on sale after Mass. Most of us are online (or someone in our family is) and there are many excellent sources of church related news and news of social justice issues available for free online. Here is a sample of what’s available:
http://www.vatican.va/news_services/or/or_eng/index.html (latest news from Vatican)
http://www.zenit.org/index.php?l=english (authentic news from Rome)
http://www.youtube.com/vatican (Vatican channel on YouTube)

http://212.77.1.245/news_services/press/vis/englinde.php#start (Vat. News service)

The following are from other news sources:
http://www.catholic.org.au/ (main portal - Australian Church)
http://www.cathnews.com/ (Australian source)
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/
http://www.catholicnews.com/
http://www.asianews.it/index.php?l=en&size=
http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/
http://cathnewsusa.com/
http://www.catholic.org/
http://www.catholic.org.au/ (main gateway Australian Church)
You might like to check some or all of these sources and bookmark them if you find them helpful. We should all keep up with what’s happening in church and church related circles, especially now that it’s so easy and while it’s all still free.

1st August 2009: Tomorrow, following the 10.15 am Baptisms I begin my 2009 annual holidays. I'll have the usual time for our diocese - three weeks and five and a half days. While I'm away Fr Colin Reinhard will look after things here. Fr John Kelly will help him. Sr Kathryn Sweeney will also be here of course. See you in a few weeks.

13th May 2009: Pope Benedict's pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The pilgrimage has been very moving. It is important for us all to be aware of the anti-Church bias of many in the secular news media. There are first class Church-based news sources that tell us what is really happening. e.g.:
