22nd July 2009: New Carmelite novice: Today Sr Mary Jane Saniel became Sr Stephanie Marie of the Resurrection and St Ignatius Loyola. Mary Jane is from our own parish of Ballina. A year ago she was at World Youth Day and a few weeks later she enter the Carmelite monastery at Goonellabah as a postulant. She is now a novice. Fr Michael and Sr Kathryn were there on the day, along with other parishioners of Ballina and Wardell. See a few pics here.

17th July 2009: Pope Benedict XVI has released his third encyclical. It is called 'Caritas in Veritate' (Charity [love] in Truth). “…Charity is at the heart of the Church's social doctrine. Every responsibility and every commitment spelt out by that doctrine is derived from charity which, according to the teaching of Jesus, is the synthesis of the entire Law (cf. Mt 22:36- 40)…” In these times of economic challenge, this is a pastoral reflection of ‘where to from here’ for the world. You can find the full letter here.

16th July 2009: Carmelite jubilees: On this day two local Carmelites celebrated significant jubilees of their Religious profession. Sr Marie Anne is celebrating her diamond jubilee and Mother Bernadette is celebrating her golden jubilee. Mother Bernadette is the prioress and Sr Marie Anne was the extern for many years until her health necessitated a return to the enclosure. We offer our congratulations and God's blessings to both jubilarians.

10th July 2009: Parish Schools Day for 2009 was held today. Students, staff and parents from all three parish schools gathered in the grounds and buildings of Xavier Catholic College for a day of enjoyment and 'getting to know you' fun. We are one parish with three schools and that is what this day is all about. See a few pics here.

20th June 2009: Father Eamon Leonard R.I.P.: Fr Leonard died during the week. A native of Ballina, he has served as a priest of the diocese all his adult life. Prior to his retirement in Kingscliff, his last official appointment was as Parish Priest of the then parish of South Murwillumbah. His Requiem Mass and funeral will be at 11 am on Tuesday 23rd June at Sacred Heart Church Murwillumbah.

19th June 2009: Pope Benedict has appointed Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop Christopher Prowse as the eighth Catholic Bishop of Sale.
The news was announced by the Vatican today and communicated in Australia by the Apostolic Nuncio in Canberra, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto. He succeeds Bishop Jeremiah Coffey who retired eighteen months ago. Bishop Prowse, 55, was born in Melbourne. He is a former Vicar General of Melbourne and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne in 2003.

6th June 2009: We welcomed Father Maraiah (Mario) Kampally to the parish for a two month assignment. Fr Mario comes from the Diocese of Nalgonda in the Indian state of Andhrah Pradesh. We look forward to getting to know him and welcoming him to our parish family.
